Forest Health & Entomology
Spectrum can provide Forest Health Overviews in addressing the following areas:
- All insects and disease agents and their interactions for all stand ages.
- Hazard rating and mapping for bark beetles and defoliators.
- Logyard management plans for wood boring insects including degrade analysis.
- Pest management plans for other insects and diseases including root rot, stem diseases, and others.
Forest Health Surveys
Spectrum can conduct aerial surveys, sketch mapping at overview, operational scales and ground surveys for:
- Spruce Bark Beetle
- Lodgepole Pine Bark Beetle
- Mountain Pine Beetle
- Disease surveys for root rots, steam cankers and other pathogenic fungi
- Western Balsam Bark Beetle
- Spruce Budworms (Eastern, Western, & 2 year cycle)
- Hemlock looper

Training ∓ Extension Activities
Spectrum offers Forest Health training courses and can offer public relations with various groups.
Entomology
Spectrum Resource Group has the experience and extensive knowledge concerning the study of bugs, plant life and their involvement with the environment. Forest ecosystems, which cover more than 45% of Canada’s land surface, are of paramount importance in terms of preserving biodiversity as well as providing raw materials for our industry. Spectrum Resource Group is at the forefront in protecting our environmental resources against pests such as insects and diseases as well as utilizing a variety of control methods.
For the past several years, we have been conducting MPB (mountain pine beetle) in-field monitoring for several licensees to determine peak flight period for hauling restrictions. In addition, our MPB Logyard Program establishes a priority milling sequence through deck inspection and pheromone-baited funnel trap monitoring.
We have performed aerial overview surveys, ground detection (walkthrough recces, grid probes, point and mark to cut surveys), individual tree treatments (such as fall and burn or debark) and Beetle Management Plan development. Recently much of our work has been directed to MPB and Spruce Beetle management. Spectrum has a great deal (plethora) of experience in detecting and analyzing MPB attack as well as providing operational recommendations.
Since 2003, Spectrum has been responsible for the implementation of the City of Prince George Mosquito Control Program. Our main objective has been to negate the spread of the West Nile Virus and our secondary objective has been to dramatically minimize the population of mosquito’s in the Prince George Area.
